Contrary to popular opinion, Darwinism is much more of a philosophical theory than a scientific one. Known publicly to be erroneous since 1980, Charles Darwin’s idea that species evolve into existence or into a more complex existence through small changes over the course of an extended amount of time is still the default ideology of the western world (Pearcey, 165). This idea suggests that the differences that occur in species are a result of natural selection, mutations, or arbitrary genetic changes. Leaving significant holes in Darwin’s argument for evolution, paleontologists revealed that the fossil records contain no evidence to support the gradual transitions or mutations that would be required to sustain Darwin’s theory and they say it never will (Pearcey, 166).
Not only does the sincerely objective evidence contradict Darwin’s theory, but also evidence previously used to support his theory is actually unsupportive and some even fabricated.
With clearly contradicting and erroneous evidence, why is Darwin’s spurious theory still trumpeted as scientific truth? It is because modern science is not committed to its own standard of objective truth. Holding to the presupposition that science must be naturalistic, many scientists have simply disregarded the overwhelming evidence of intelligent design. Presumption that science must exclude any supernatural influence or revelation removes objectivity relating to the actual evidence. Without this objectivity, science has become a platform for the propagation of philosophical not scientific theories, namely philosophical naturalism.
Philosophical naturalism suggests that truth can only be determined through the measurement of nature or natural causes. Even as a philosophy this idea falls short of acceptance because any complete philosophy, as pointed out by Pearcey, must account for the origin of man, the origin of evil, and provide a viable solution for that evil. To accept naturalism’s concept of evolution requires faith to accept the immeasurable origins of matter.
Darwin’s evolution is more than flawed science; it is a flawed worldview. The logical conclusion of adopting philosophical naturalism as a worldview leads to the exclusion of all ethical and moral judgment. People would judge their behavior based strictly on their own personal interest removing any universal standard of right and wrong (Pearcey, 239). Few people would be willing to adopt such a worldview once they see it in action.
To build a reasonable worldview one must truly do what many scientists have only pretended to do; look at the evidence without bias. While further scientific discoveries continue to challenge Darwin’s theories, they reinforce the idea of intelligent design. Intelligent design suggests that the world is too ordered and too complex in its structure to have an arbitrary or random source. The discovery of such a structure woven within the fabric of our existence supports the idea of intelligent design.
Discovered by Francis Crick and James Watson, the double-helix structure of DNA establishes yet another argument for intelligent design (Pearcey, 171). What Crick and Watson discovered is a very precise association of intricate sequences within the DNA. The likelihood of chance generating such organized complexity does not exist. Laws of nature could not produce such non-repeating organized sequences either. Laws produce expected patterns unlike the intricate sequences found in DNA. The only remaining option is that the complexities found in DNA result from intentional and intelligent design. If we remove Darwin’s presupposition of naturalism, it becomes much easier to see science for what it is really disclosing.
While unbiased science goes far in crediting God with creation, it is faith that completes the picture. People require a purpose and meaning in life that is not found in naturalism. It is found in God’s word. Even more exciting is that faith placed in scripture will often be validated through unbiased science.
Genesis tells us “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” As scientific research continues to reveal the existence of “specified complexity” (Pearcey, 198), unbiased reviews of the data will surely lead us to the conclusion that there is an intelligent designer just like the Bible said. Searching for solutions apart from God’s word is strongly cautioned. Isaiah cautions us concerning our own wisdom in chapter 47 verse 10. “Your wisdom and your knowledge, they have deluded you; For you have said in your heart, ‘I am, and there is no one besides me.’” This caution is also clear in 1 Corinthians 3:18-20. “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, “He is the one who catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “the Lord knows the reasoning of the wise, that they are useless.” The idea here is not that unbiased and accurate scientific study has no value or is somehow sacrilegious, but that it should be done in light of God’s revelation.
